FREIGHT DENSITY (CUBE RULE)
Our rates are predicated on achieving a minimum payload on each trip. Freight that is light and bulky will be deemed to weigh 10 pounds per cubic foot for the smallest rectangle of space occupied. Shipments that occupy 8 feet of trailer width and at least 4 feet of trailer length will be deemed to weigh 1000 pounds per lineal foot of trailer occupied. Shipments on which, or beside which, it is impractical to load other freight, will be deemed to occupy 8 feet of trailer height or width, as the case may be.
EXCESS VALUATION
Our rates are predicated on insuring shipments against loss or damage to a maximum valuation of $2.00 per pound, based on the actual weight of the entire shipment as shown on the bill of lading. If a consignor requires that Exalta accept liability for a value greater than that, the consignor must declare such higher value on the bill of lading. A fee of 1% of the amount of the excess valuation will be charged, with a minimum fee being $2.00. If the excess value of the shipment is more than $50,000, the consignor must request authorization from the company prior to the driver signing the bill of lading.
PROTECTIVE SERVICE
Exalta provides protective service against heat and cold, providing that the consignor requests such service be provided in advance of loading and indicates the service desired on the bill of lading.
Protection against freezing (heated service) means that the temperature in the trailer will be kept at or above 0 degrees Celcius. The additional charge for this protection will be 10% of the freight charges for shipments weighing 9,999 pounds or less, and 5% for shipments weighing 10,000 pounds or more. If protection against freezing is requested on bills of lading dated from October 1st to March 31st inclusive, the additional charges will be applied, regardless of the actual outdoor temperatures.
Controlled temperature protection (refrigerated service) requires that the thermostat of the refrigeration unit be set at a fixed temperature and is noted on the bill of lading as such. The additional charge for this protection will be 20% of the freight charges for shipments weighing 9,999 pounds or less, and 10% for shipments weighing 10,000 pounds or more.
The minimum charge for providing protective service is $8.00 per shipment. If the loading or unloading of a temperature controlled unit exceeds 2 hours, additional charges of $35.00 per hour will be charged for each hour, or portion thereof, of the delay.
DANGEROUS GOODS
Exalta transports some dangerous goods as a normal part of its service and does not charge an extra fee for such shipments. However, Exalta does not accept hazardous waste, infectious substances, or radioactive materials. Consignors must notify Exalta of the nature of the dangerous goods shipment prior to tendering the shipment so that its acceptability for transport can be determined. Consignors of dangerous goods are responsible for compliance with the provisions of the Transport of Dangerous Goods regulations and must supply all placards and emergency response instructions to Exalta at the same time as a properly completed bill of lading for dangerous goods is signed.
C.O.D. SERVICES
When a bill of lading has instructions to collect amounts on behalf of the consignor prior to delivery, Exalta will perform this service for a fee equal to 5% of the amount to be collected, with a minimum charge of $40.00 per shipment. The amount to be collected, fees for collection and freight charges if applicable, must be paid by cash, certified cheque or bank draft. Shipments of perishable goods will not be accepted on a C.O.D. basis.
EMBARGOED FREIGHT
In addition to the dangerous goods listed above that Exalta does not accept for transport, there are other types of shipments that Exalta is not equipped to handle without undue risk of damage.
